State Department and USAID personnel must also be medically evaluated as able to perform job-specific requirements and handle the daily stressors of life abroad.

What Is a MOD Pre-Deployment Physical?
A MOD pre-deployment physical is a full physical exam done in accordance with CENTCOM guidelines. The physical is designed to ensure those entering a foreign environment are physically fit and able to perform their duties. Both service people and civilian contractors are expected to meet or exceed the minimal standards set by the MOD guidelines.
Pre-deployment medical services provided by Passport Health include:
- MOD-compliant physical examination
- MOD-required lab work, including tuberculosis testing
- MOD-required immunizations, including anthrax, Japanese encephalitis or others required for travel to the designated region
- Antimalarial medication and advice, if needed for the designated region
- Visual acuity tests
- Audiograms
- DNA sampling
- EKGs
- Spirometry

Additional services may be available based on MOD requirements for travel to designated regions.
How Do I Know If I Need a MOD Pre-Deployment Physical?
MOD physical exams are required for any individuals deploying to a region under the U.S. Department of Defense. Individuals who may need a MOD exam include: uniformed service members, DoD civilian personnel and DoD contract personnel. Final approval if an individual needs a MOD physical or if they will be allowed into an area of operations after receiving the physical rest with the CENTCOM Surgeon or Service Component Surgeon, per MOD guidelines.
Depending on the situation, MOD guidelines may extend to family members entering the area of operation with DoD personnel (civilian or otherwise). Be sure to verify with your liaison if you are unsure if a MOD exam is required for yourself or others.
